Backcrossed Mauve Egger Pairings

For Spring 2024, we’ve put our resident mauve eggers (basically a later generation cross that does not carry the blue gene and has a heavy bloom) back under our heavy bloom Black Copper Marans males. There isn’t a perfect notation for this, so we’ll call them a Mauve Bloom Backcross project.

A first generation cross under our purple bloom Marans male can have a wide variety of plumage, with blue/black/splash or black/white mottling in their lineage. A second generation cross will often look VERY similar in plumage and type to a pure Black Copper Marans. Sometimes these second backcrosses will look very different after their first year molt.

Note: Backcrosses to our Black Copper Marans— especially the Mauve Bloom BC2 backcross— can look very similar to their pure-bred Black Copper Marans lineage, so you’ll want to be careful to not mix them up. Pure Black Copper Marans have a darker pigmentation set on the egg and will look more purple with a heavy bloom, where Mauve Bloom mixes have a lighter pigmentation lineage and will appear more on the side of pink to mauve when covered in heavy bloom. This is a project and there will be high variability in plumage and resulting eggs!
